Double decker buses lend themselves particularly well to larger library bus conversions due to the space offered. Downstairs, the interior can be stripped back to basics, refurbished to your specifications (this can be a great way to add your own stamp on the look and feel of your library bus, with bespoke colour schemes and paintwork and graphics in line with your branding) and then shelving installed to maximise space.

Upstairs can then house a dedicated reading space, or a number of cosy reading nooks – tailored to the reading styles and needs of your likely ‘customers’. Allow your visitors to immerse themselves in to the experience.
If you’re looking to recreate the full library experience, the upper deck of your bus could even play host to an IT lab. This could be a great addition to a rural library bus, with the opportunity for older generations to gain access to a whole host of online resources.

Getting pupils involved
If you’re fundraising, it’s a good idea to get your pupils involved with the project.
Why not run a competition to name your new bus? Or ask your pupils to get involved in designing the artwork for the exterior of the bus? It’s a great way to build excitement around the new project and can also give a much-needed boost to fundraising if pupils can start to visualise their unique new classroom.

What size vehicle are you planning to convert? Do you already have it, or are you right at the beginning of your project?
What is the purpose of the bus? Will it be an Art Studio? A Science Lab? A library? Or just an additional learning space that can be flexed to your needs, as and when you need it?
What are your must-haves? Usually, schools come to us with a wishlist of requirements – it’s helpful to have an idea of what you can’t live without, and what are ‘nice-to-haves’?
